Holiday Office Party Planning 101

Holiday Office Party Planning 101 - So Where Should You Begin? - AdminUniverse

Administrative Professionals don’t HAVE to plan the holiday office party—they GET to plan the office holiday party! Even though it comes around the same time every year, somehow, planning it becomes a last-minute affair. Delicious food, exciting music, and festive décor… your colleagues will be expecting all of these, but time is running out and you are on a budget. To pull this off, it’s going to take some savvy shopping and swift maneuvering. Remember, just because you’re late to planning doesn’t mean it’s too late to plan. So, where should you begin?

When: The best time to plan the holiday office party is during the lunch hour. It gives your colleagues the opportunity to enjoy the party without having to sacrifice extra time away from their desks.

Where: Make sure the party is conveniently located, like in the break room! You should already have utensils, plates, and napkins there because that’s where your coworkers get to eat! That’s one less thing for you to worry about.

Who: Remember… this is a HOLIDAY party. Your diverse group of coworkers come from many different places and backgrounds, so be inclusive. Spread holiday cheer to everyone this year!

What: Try to set up a gift exchange amongst your colleagues. This way, they bring the entertainment with them. Games like Secret Santa and White Elephant are fun for everyone AND it encourages people to get to know one another. Encouraging your coworkers to participate in a potluck is also a delicious (and financially responsible) way to make sure that there is food at the party!

Why: Because you’re the Administrative Professional! Who better to plan the party than someone with the interpersonal skills needed to keep it moving smoothly? Nobody! This is where you can put your unique skill set on display!

Now that we’ve covered the 5 W’s, it’s time to discuss your outfit. With all the presents you’re buying for your loved ones, purchasing a brand-new outfit for the office holiday party just isn’t in the cards. But don’t worry! There are many ways to come up with an appropriate outfit with clothing that you already have in your closet.

If you have a little black dress, consider wearing it with some tights and ballet flats. If that’s too dressy, throw on a flannel or turtleneck with some jeans! Nothing says winter quite like a cozy outfit. It’s also important to note that an office party is not a black-tie event, nor is it an excuse to wear anything naughty—you don’t want a lump of coal in your stocking, do you? Be fun, be festive, but above all else, be the Administrative Professional that sets an example for your colleagues. Smile often, laugh sincerely and be kind. That’s what the holidays are all about.
