Adaptive, intuitive, and driven. Administrative Professionals can take stock of what they’re given and come up with strategies to get the job done. Developing this skill is key to being successful in an office setting. Some things slip through the cracks and others are forgotten about, but even in the face of adversity, Administrative Professionals are asked to finish the task at hand… all with smiles on their faces! On the surface, this seems nearly impossible. Luckily, there are methods to breaking down difficult situations, compartmentalizing what needs to be done, and then executing!

Adapt to overcome:

Adaptability is a defining feature in successful Administrative Professionals. So, how should we approach this? The first step is to understand that change is inevitable; very rarely do things happen the way we want them to. Successful Administrative Professionals start each day with the mindset that they are prepared with a prioritized to-do list, yet expecting that things will change, different requests will come, or your executive will throw a wrench into your beautifully planned day.  Top performing EA’s, take unexpected changes in stride and quickly, positively, and effectively adjust to accommodate others. This mindset sets an example for the rest of the staff, peers, and executives, emphasizing leadership and helps maintain a positive attitude. Expected change takes less of an emotional toll than unexpected circumstances.

Multitask effectively:

The trick to multitasking is to focus on the ‘tasking’ and to tame the ‘multi.’ Multitasking is an everyday occurrence for administrative professionals. Being the glue that holds an office together requires Administrative Professionals to prioritize and categorize. Take stock of what tasks need to be completed first and then classify them into groups based on similar needs. This is important because the mind cannot multitask, just share time and attention between objectives. So, handling similar tasks together requires less time sharing, making ‘multitasking’ a much simpler task.
